The Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group may feature RAM in its portfolio of brands, but the Fiat marque is reportedly looking elsewhere for its pickup truck needs, and in particular, Mitsubishi and its mid-size L200, also known as the Triton in some markets.
The inside sources that broke the story to Autonews Europe said Mitsubishi will provide Fiat Professional with a version of their L200 starting in 2016, though at this point, it’s not clear if it will be the current or the next generation model, and whether it will be built at the Japanese firm’s Thailand plant that manufacturers the current L200.
The report said Fiat declined to comment on the story.
Mitsubishi’s traditional body-on-frame pickup that’s offered in rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations will be positioned atop Fiat’s unibody small truck, the Strada.
Back in 2010, FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne had said they would add the Dodge Dakota pickup truck to Fiat Professional’s range, but the company never went through with that plan.
