McLaren will once again use the iconic GTR moniker on one of its cars, twenty years after the legendary McLaren F1 GTR won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This time though, the GTR moniker won’t designate a race car, but the track-only version of the McLaren P1, as an homage to its race-winning ancestor.

McLaren will start building the limited-run model when the 375th and final example of the road car has been completed. The British sports car manufacturer says the P1 GTR will be “the best driver’s car in the world on track,” as it won’t need to comply with road legislation.

This means it will have greater levels of performance, grip, aerodynamics and downforce than the road car. McLaren says the P1 GTR will also feature “more extreme” technologies and a powertrain with an intended power output of 1,000PS (986 bhp), 84PS (83 hp) more than the street-legal P1. The car will ride on race-proven slick tyres, will have a widened track as well as more aggressive and distinctive styling.

Each McLaren P1 GTR will be priced at £1.98 million ($3.35 million), with the price including a tailored program created for each customer to build driver capability. This program will include participation in a minimum of six dedicated international drive events to be held at some of the world’s most iconic Formula 1 circuits, exclusive consultations with the McLaren driver fitness team and Design Director Frank Stephenson and privileged access to one of the McLaren racing simulators.

McLaren says production numbers are still to be determined, “but will be strictly limited.”
