If you’re the kind of person who buys their cars like they buy household appliances, like microwaves and dishwashers, for their function and reassuring click made by all the buttons and dials, then you’ll love a VW Golf.
The hatchback will be enough for most people, but those who won’t want to go further up the range and get a Passat, yet will still need more room, there’s always the estate model to consider.
VW’s range is so consistent, that all the Carbuyer review of it posted below is able to point out is that it’s exactly like the hatchback, but with a bigger boot and slightly more space for rear occupants – clever.
That’s pretty much it, as it gets the same engines, same economy figures, same BlueMotion eco-variant. Its only downside, as per this review, seems to be the fact that the rear seats don’t fold completely flat.
Do check out its rivals before you buy into its world of solid-sounding thumps and softer-touch-than-you’d-expect plastics – the Honda Civic Tourer has a funky design and a praiseworthy new small diesel, while the Focus is still said to be king of the backroad.
