We already know the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is set to undergo intrusive surgery in order to remain viable towards the turn of the decade, yet what we didn’t know (but foretold through a rendering we posted) is that the brand is also looking to create a smaller interpretation of it.

Set to make its debut in 2019, the GLB, as it’s believed to be called by Automobile magazine; its codename is said to be X247. Apparently, Mercedes had planned two variants of the model, but in the end, only the seven-seater variant riding on an extended wheelbase made the cut.

The magazine’s information suggests the GLB would mix G-Class styling and rugged appearance with B-Class (MPV/minivan) proportions, plus the bonus of GLA-style handling.

Interestingly, the report says the model will be front-wheel drive biased, using a new development of the jointly-created MFA 2 platform, which is currently being worked on. The GLB, it 4Matic all-wheel drive will be offered as an option.

Power could come from Renault-sourced three-cylinder engines for entry level models and anything bigger than that will be Mercedes’ own; the basic diesel powerplants may also come from the French firm and all will probably be coupled to nine-speed automatic gearboxes.
