An all-new Ibiza from SEAT is set to make its debut sometime in 2016 or 2017, and we already know what its basic shape will be, courtesy of comparative slides the manufacturer provided to compare this new model’s outline with that of its predecessors.

The model will completely ditch the current underpinnings and ride on a shrunken down MQB platform instead, like the Audi A1, according to AutoExpress.

One of the goals with this new model is to infuse it with identity, so that “Even without badges it will clearly be an Ibiza, we are working really hard on the proportions so this new car still looks good when we celebrate the Ibiza’s 50th anniversary,” according to SEAT design boss, Alejandro Mesonero.

He added that “The fifth-generation [Ibiza] is something I’m approaching with much excitement. For me the Ibiza is a car that has evolved with small-scale revolutions.” The promise is that the car will be “a significant step forward,” in order to keep itself relevant on the market while at the same time obtaining an identity different to that of other models, like the Leon.

The CEO of SEAT also had something to add. His view is that “Designing a new Ibiza is an experience – it need to be normal enough to be bought by everyone, but special enough to stand out.”
