For some people (me included), the first generation BMW 6-Series is one of the most representative designs of the German carmaker. With its timeless understated styling, shark nose and athletic appearance, it’s one of the most recognizable BMWs ever made. Not to mention its sweet inline six-cylinder engine lineup culminating with the 282hp 3.5-liter from the M635 CSi.
BMW looks back at the E24 6-Series in a video tribute that features Armin Gollob, a former designer for BMW Group Exterior Components who was part of the team that designed the car. He was responsible for details like the wedge-shaped rearview mirrors, water drainage channels that helped fight corrosion and the protective frame on which the BMW kidneys were placed.
The E24 6-Series was also one of the first BMWs to feature many electronics, with the most suggestive example being the check control feature, the predecessor of today’s onboard computer.
