Mitsubishi has announced it will build its global compact sedan to Chrysler’s Mexican subsidiary for sale in Mexico starting November 2014. The five-year agreement will see the car compete in the B-segment, one of the largest in the Mexican market, which represented 23 percent (250,000 units) of total vehicle sales in 2013.
“This new contract reaffirms the strong relationship that Chrysler de Mexico has built with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation since 2003 when we began distributing Mitsubishi vehicles in our country, which have garnered great acceptance in the Mexican market,” said Bruno Cattori, President and CEO of Chrysler de Mexico.
“With this agreement, we continue to strengthen our successful relationship with Chrysler de Mexico, and we expect that our global compact sedan will be accepted in the Mexican market as well as Asian and ASEAN markets where we have been achieving good sales performance,” said Mr. Osamu Masuko, Chairman of the Board/CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
Mitsubishi global compact sedan is the Mirage-based Attrage, which will also be sold as a Chrysler in China and other Asian markets, according to the Nikkei business daily in Japan. The partnership will help Fiat expand in Asia by sourcing cheaper, economical cars from Mitsubishi, the newspaper added.
Fiat Chrysler has been present in China for some time, but has only achieved a market share of 0.6 percent in the world’s largest car market and in the Asia-Pacific region.
