Despite the fact that Dieter Zetsche pulled the plug on the ill-fated Maybach brand back in 2012, it seems that the century old nameplate is far from being dead, with recent rumors rooting for its return in the upcoming years.
Maybach Manufaktur is still dead as a car manufacturer, so you won’t get to see a 57 or a 62 “Zombie Edition” any time soon, but Maybach as a model name is very much in, with the first car to bear the name again being less than six months away from launch.
We are naturally talking about the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Maybach, which according to recent rumors should be unveiled at the 2014 Guangzhou Auto Show.
Essentially an even longer and more luxurious 2+2 variant of the S-Class, the uber-sedan is actually the first of many, with the S-Class Maybach representing just the first step for Mercedes-Benz to introduce yet another sub-brand that will sport the Maybach moniker.
According to the Aussies from Motoring, who quote none other than the head of development at Mercedes-Benz, Thomas Webber, the Maybach nameplate may appear on more than just a stretched S-Class, with the future generation of the GL-Class to get a similar luxury variant.
Not only that, but the peeps from Motoring somehow also got the fact that the S-Class Coupe will get a Maybach version, which in essence should feel pretty much like the revenge of the gorgeous Maybach Exelero – the concept car that everyone wanted to be made in series but wasn’t.
With the hyper-luxury SUV market to be soon taken over by the upcoming Bentley SUV and Lamborghini also jumping on the bandwagon in the upcoming years, we could see a Maybach variant of the not-yet-launched Mercedes-Benz MLC as well, albeit none of it is officially confirmed as of yet. Thomas Webber only hinted at these changes, but the fact remains, Maybach will rise from the dead once again.
