Renault and Fiat have signed an agreement under which the French carmaker will supply Fiat with a light commercial vehicle based on an existing Renault platform.
The two partners said the styling of the Fiat vehicle will be developed by the Italian automaker and will feature “unique and distinctive elements on the model, branded Fiat Professional.”
The new unnamed vehicle will be manufactured by Renault in France starting from the second quarter of 2016. There are no further details regarding the size or type of vehicle Renault will supply to Fiat.
The French carmaker’s existing light commercial vehicle range includes the compact Kangoo, the mid-sized Trafic (pictured) and the large Master. All three are available in a wide range of lengths, heights and body styles. Fiat Professional’s lineup currently includes the small Fiorino van and Strada pickup, compact Doblo, medium-sized Scudo and full-size Ducato.
The LCV deal is the first industrial partnership between Fiat and Renault, two of Europe’s largest mass-market carmakers. Renault has been the top-selling manufacturer of light-commercial vehicles in Europe for the past 16 years.
