While we previously quoted an American source that suggested MG was looking at creating a sports car/roadster, now a UK-based publication is confirming that it may be more than just an unfounded rumor.

AutoExpress quotes an MG insider who reportedly “confirmed bosses have been discussing a return to the open-top sports car market.” It’s still a faraway prospect, and it’s not a sure thing, since its creation relies heavily on the success of MG’s new mainstream models.

The Chinese-owned brand also wants to create its own modular platforms, like VW’s MQB, and it’s one of these platforms that would eventually end up underpinning the proposed sports car, as well.

If it does materialize, don’t expect to see it arrive any sooner than the turn of the decade – it’s definitely not going to be the first of the four new proposed MG models; it’s said to be preceded by two crossovers and a hatchback.
