Fans of the BMW 2002 will get a treat this month: a rare example of the breed going around one of the most famed racetracks.
BMW announced today its participation in the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion at Laguna Seca in California. And it’s bringing along a very special example of the revered classic 2002ti.
This 1970 Alpina 2002ti features some undisclosed engine upgrades, as well as a Weber side draft carburetor and flared fenders. It was sold to dealer Vasek Polak in California, and run in some SCCA events in 1971 and 72, according to BMW. The company purchased it after it spent 24 years in storage, and restored it to the condition seen here.
The car will be driven around Laguna Seca by Road & Track editor Sam Smith.
BMW is also using the race as a way to promote the new Alpina B6 Gran Coupe, which goes on sale through BMW dealers later this year.
The race will be held August 14 through the 17 at Laguna Seca.
