A 40-year old driver from Spartanburg County has been charged with resisting arrest after he refused to comply with an officer’s orders, repeatedly shouting to “shoot him down like Michael Brown”.
The incident started out as a routine traffic stop when a South Carolina police officer reportedly saw the man, who was later identified as Derrick Martino Miller, driving without a seat belt, but the situation quickly escalated.
After pulling over in a parking lot, Miller got out of his car and started walking towards the cop, ignoring requests to get back into the vehicle. The patrol car dash-cam footage shows the two men scuffling with Miller passively disobeying the officer’s orders and repeatedly yelling, “Shoot me”.
To make matters worse, the cop noticed a “4- to 5-year-old child” seated in the front of the car who started crying and told Miller that he didn’t want to use a taser on him in front of his kid.
The officer eventually placed Miller on the cruiser’s hood and waited for backup. He was then arrested and taken to the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
Lt. Jim Holcombe with the Greer Police Department told WYFF4 News that the Michael Brown shooting in Missouri “is putting stress on the entire community”.
“This to me is an isolated incident with someone trying to use something in the national media to his advantage,” commented Holcombe.
