One of the most anticipated Alfa Romeos in years, the Giulia sedan, is said to offer a big surprise when it goes on sale in late 2015.
Italy’s BMW 3-Series rival is expected to offer a high-performance GTA version right from the start of sales, with around 500 hp under its bonnet.
According to inside information obtained by Auto Express, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA will be powered by a Ferrari-built 3.0-liter biturbo V6 gasoline engine, a version of the unit used by the Maserati Ghibli. The exact output figure is not yet clear, but the report says it’s expected to be between 480hp and 520hp.
The new Giulia will use a rear-wheel drive platform, with the GTA version expected to be lighter than the BMW M3, which tips the scales at 1,635 kg (3,604 lbs). That’s because the high-performance Alfa will feature high-strength steel and aluminum sections. As a result, says the report, the Giulia GTA “should” be faster than the M3, with the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration expected to be under 4 seconds.
The Giulia GTA may feature a limited-slip differential and a dual-clutch gearbox as standard. The magazine says that the range-topping Giulia is expected to cost approximately £50,000 (€62,410) in the UK, while regular models should start from £22,000 (€27,430). The Giulia range will feature four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with a high-performance 350hp six-cylinder diesel also believed to be under development.
Design-wise, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is expected to feature an arrowhead front grille, telephone-dial alloys, bonnet vents, a more aggressive aerodynamic kit and hidden rear handles.
