It’s been suggested that the next Corvette ZR1 could switch from a front-engined to a mid-engined configuration, according to inside sources quoted by MotorTrend.
In fact, it sounds kind of daft to only have one variant of the next ‘Vette mid-engined, while the others retain the traditional layout – it’s fair speculation therefor to say that not only the ZR1, but all next-gen Corvette (C8s) will have a mid-ship-mounted motor.
Apparently, this is more than mere guesswork on our part, as the fact that all C8 ‘Vettes could switch to a mid-engined layout was also reportedly confirmed by one of the MT sources, as well.
We’re sure you’re aware of the fact that there have been many Corvette prototypes and concepts over the years (1964 CERV II Concept pictured) that had their engines in the middle. Most recently, it seems that the C7 should have been mid-engined too, but the project was culled due to GM’s financial woes and they just stuck to (the more finances-friendly tactic of) evolving the traditional formula instead.
If you’re not convinced, we’ll add a bit more context. Need we remind you that the next Camaro will be built atop the GM Alpha running gear that also underpins the Cadillac ATS? This means the future all-new Camaro will be noticeably lighter (and faster) than before, therefore challenging the Corvette’s performance crown in the GM stable – it’s kind of like the Porsche 911-Cayman-Boxster stepping on each other’s toes.
This brings us neatly to the idea (suggested by the same source) that a Corvette family could be created, featuring both front- and mid-engined models of varying performance profiles and prices
