Sometimes it’s almost beyond belief to see how much of an advantage cars that come with all-wheel drive have when launching, as opposed to those that don’t.
In this drag race staged by EVO, the vehicle responsible for the AWD shock is the Porsche Macan Turbo, while the one with just one powered axle (and that bogs down) is the new BMW M3.
The Porsche is that much heavier and less slippery through the air, but all of that solid physics is completely ignored for the first few yards of the race, when it shoot forward like you wouldn’t believe. The M3 does gain traction fairly quickly, and then begins pulling ahead, but if this were a traffic light drag race, in slightly damp conditions, the Porsche may have been able to stay ahead for longer.
As is, the M3 claws its way back immediately and has no trouble going past…
The two cars are also similarly priced, and the decision to buy either one is made difficult by the other’s existence. The Porsche would probably be the better overall choice, particularly because it proved it can do the sports car stuff rather well, while also being able to cope with some moderate off-road driving as well.
