Whatever taboos BMW had in the past, they’re all gone, and from the first front-wheel drive model, the Bavarians are now preparing for their first 7-seater minivan.

The car is based on the five-seater 2-Series Active Tourer (the FWD BMW we mentioned), but will have a longer body to accommodate a third row of two small seats, which will likely fold down (or on the side) when not in use to increase trunk capacity.

In this case, the longer version of the 2-Series Active Tourer should improve upon the 468 liters of luggage space offered on the five-seat model.

You can tell that there’s something different about this 2-Series AT 7-seat tester we spied in Germany from the extended window line behind the front doors, the visibly longer rear overhang and the boxier rear end styling.

This particular prototype was dressed in the M Sport package with more aggressively styled bumpers and bigger wheels.

The 7-seater model will share its diesel and petrol engine range with the regular 2-Series Active Tourer when it goes on sale, initially in Europe, next year.
