Tesla announced Friday an 8-year, unlimited mile warranty that will be applied retroactively to all Model S cars.
In a post on Tesla Motors’ blog, Elon Musk said the warranty of the drive unit now matches that of the battery pack. Not only is it retroactive, but the new warranty covers all Model S cars no matter how many owners they’ve had for the duration of the factory warranty.
Musk also said the new policy will have a “moderately negative effect on Tesla earnings in the short term,” but hinted the company isn’t forecasting a lot of warranty repairs for the cars.
The news comes on the heels of Edmunds and Consumer Reports highlighting the problems they’ve had with their respective Model S cars under long-term use.
