BMW has already announced mechanical updates for the recently-launched 2-Series Active Tourer in the form of three new engines and the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

As of November 2014, BMW’s first MPV and front-wheel drive model will be available with two new diesel engines and a petrol unit, all using BMW’s latest TwinPower Turbo Technology. The diesels are an entry-level 3-cylinder 1.5-liter unit producing 116PS (114hp) and a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine developing 190PS (187hp).

Used in the BMW 216d Active Tourer, the smaller engine has an average fuel consumption of 3.9–3.8 l/100 km (60.3-61.9 mpg US), with CO2 emissions of 104–99 g/km. The engine produces 116PS (114hp) at 4,000 rpm and 270Nm (199lb-ft) of torque at 1,750 rpm, allowing the 216d Active Tourer to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 10.6 seconds and to reach a top speed of 195 km/h (121mph).

The larger diesel unit is the same that was recently added to the 2-Series Coupe lineup. Offered in the BMW 220d Active Tourer as the range-topping diesel-powered model, the 2.0-liter unit produces 190PS (187hp) at 4,000 rpm and 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque at 1,750 rpm. Combined fuel consumption is 4.5-4.4 l/100 km (52.2-53.4 mpg US), while CO2 emissions vary between 119–115 g/km.

Finally the new petrol engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder producing 192PS (189hp) at 4,700 rpm and 280Nm (206lb-ft) of torque. Offered in the 220i Active Tourer, the engine delivers sporty performance figures, with the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint taking 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). Combined fuel economy is 6.1-5.9 l/100 km (38.5-39.8 mpg US).

Both the diesels and the petrol engine are available with either a standard 6-speed transmission or an optional 8-speed Steptronic automatic – the entry-level diesel is only available with the manual.

As for the xDrive, it will only be available for the top engine variants of the 2-Series Active Tourer, the 225i and 220d.
