General Motors confirmed plans to build a “top-end, high-technology” Cadillac model at the firm’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant in the fourth quarter of 2015.
“Positioned above today’s CTS and XTS product lines, the new top-of-the-line Cadillac adds to rather than replaces any model in the portfolio. The model name will be announced soon. It will make its public debut in the first half of next year,” said GM.
While the automaker declined to reveal specific details about the as-yet unnamed car, it’s no secret that Cadillac has been working on a full-size luxury sedan to compete with the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and in fact, we snapped a prototype model undergoing testing earlier this year.
“The objective for this upcoming model is to lift the Cadillac range by entering the elite class of top-level luxury cars,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “Currently in development, this new rear wheel drive-oriented sedan uses completely new, custom-designed materials on a unique vehicle architecture.”
It is expected that the new premium sedan, which currently bears the LTS codename, will be the first car to benefit from Cadillac’s new “intelligent and connected” technologies that include a Super Cruise automated driving system and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology, which were announced just last week.
“In addition to new technology in the car itself, we are instituting innovative manufacturing techniques to assemble it with the precision deserving of a luxury make,” said Cadillac’s new boss.
The large rear wheel drive sedan will most likely draw inspiration from the Elmiraj Concept. Carscoops sources have said the car will be offered with a new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 and GM’s current 3.6-liter turbocharged V6 that produces 420hp in the CTS V-Sport, while we could see the Elmiraj’ new 4.5-liter Turbo with more than 500hp sitting at the top of the range.
