Thanks to the collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, the affordable rear-wheel drive coupe is a reality once again, much to the delight of gearheads everywhere.
The Toyota GT86 (marketed as Scion FR-S in North America) and the Subaru BRZ are two almost identical cars differentiated only by brand-specific badging. But how did Toyota make up its mind about developing a sports car with Subaru, a company with which it hadn’t collaborated on a project of this scale before?
Well, the story of how the two companies got together is quite interesting, and the starting point was Subaru’s boxer engines, as XCAR tells in the video you are about to watch. But things quickly got complicated before the GT86 and BRZ got the chance of being built.
