In Local Motors’ tradition of asking for a design and then waiting for people to contribute their designs, the company has chosen a look for its upcoming sports car. Now that it’s been picked, the next step is to start trying to figure out ways to make it into a real car.
The winning concept is called the SF-01 Street Fighter, created by Greg Thompson, and it totally looks like something Local Motors would build. It features a (visible) tube frame tub and “aims to be the ultimate affordable high performance track enthusiast platform on the market,” sporting various engines raging from inline-fours to V8s.
This power choice flexibility stems from the concept’s long wheelbase which means it can accommodate quite a large power plant under its hood.
Most of it is expected to be manufactured in house, though off-the-shelf components will be liberally employed, especially where safety is concerned. It needs to be Department of Transportation-approved, so it’s set to get “Hella Bi Xenon headlights, Dodge Dart tail lights, and universal motorcycle LED blinkers,” among others.
