Earlier this year, VW of America CEO Michael Horn confirmed that the VW Phaeton would return to the US in 2018 and now fresh details about the sedan have emerged.
The second generation of the luxury sedan will reportedly offer high-powered turbocharged direct injection diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. According to sources cited by Automotive News, the all-new Phaeton will be available with a V8 turbodiesel with around 450 hp and a V6 petrol plug-in hybrid rated at more than 400 hp.
VW will also offer a range-topping W12 engine, but for some reason that one is unlikely to be available in the US. The new Phaeton will be based on VW Group’s MLB Evo modular-longitudinal platform which was developed by Audi for the next-generation A4, A6 and A8 sedans. The same platform will also be used by the next generation Audi Q7 and VW Touareg SUVs.
Said to arrive in the United States as a 2018 or 2019 model, the all-new Phaeton will be priced from $70,000. Sources also said the car is “virtually developed and finished,” but VW is not rushing to replace the current generation model, which is still selling well in China. The first-generation VW Phaeton was discontinued in 2006 in the US market following disappointing sales.
