GM Europe’s Opel and Vauxhall brands have tossed out the first image of their upcoming affordable city car that’s schedule for launch next summer.
While Vauxhall has christened the car Viva, thus paying homage to its original model that sold some 1.5 million units from 1963 to 1979, Opel will use a different name for its Agila replacement and which will be announced to the public on Thursday, September 11.
“Offering an extremely attractive price point, the Viva will have a five-door body style with either four or five seats,” said Vauxhall in a statement hinting at an affordable entry that may very well try to steal sales from Renault’s low-cost Dacia brand.
It will also compete against the Renault Twingo, Smart ForFour and PSA-Toyota’s trio of city cars.
The Viva is based on the next generation of the Chevrolet Spark and it’s expected that both cars will get GM’s latest family of fuel-efficient three- and four-cylinder engines. Earlier this year, we spied the two GM models testing alongside in Germany.
GM didn’t say if the car will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this October of if it will wait until next year and the Geneva auto show.
