An all-new Toyota HiLux is on its way with our spies nabbing a prototype wearing a production body in Southern Europe while undergoing hot weather testing.
The HiLux moniker might not mean a lot to U.S. consumers where Toyota sells the Tacoma, but it does to the rest of the world, as the compact pickup truck is one of the longest running, and in many markets, if not the, one of the best-selling nameplates in its segment.
Our man with the long lens said Toyota was benchmarking the eighth generation of the HiLux against VW’s successful Amarok truck.
The HiLux has always been a tool in the hands of professionals and that’s mirrored in its no-frills appearance, though, it does look like Toyota tried to give it a bit of a modern touch up front with the Highlander-style headlamps that incorporate LED units and a slimmer, less truck-like grille.
Naturally, the new model will be offered in a number of different bodies, including single and dual-cab configurations.
We still don’t know much about the engine offerings other than that it will most certainly get petrol and diesel units, with the possibility of a hybrid version to keep up with the times.
