We heard you want to see more of the new 2016 Mazda MX-5, so here’s a fresh assortment of photos (53 in total) and the first video presentation of the roadster.
There’s so much to explore about the fourth generation MX-5, known internally as the ND, as we’ve only touched the tip of the surface, since Mazda is holding back on plenty of details, including the engine range.
Given that it won’t go on sale until mid-2015, something tells that, if it wasn’t for the Miata’s 25th anniversary, Mazda would have probably waited until next year to give us a first look at the car.
For now, one of the major talking points about the MX-5 ND is the new look – we’ll leave you to tell us what you think about it in the comments box, after we mention that, we believe the pre-production model would have benefitted from slightly bigger wheels, as it’s wearing 16-inch rims shod in 195/50 rubber.
In the gallery, we also have new photos of the interior in which we get to see several interesting details about the equipment features. These include the twin-USB ports (positioned in a not-so convenient place in front of the handbrake), the rotary knob for the infotainment system, what looks like a parking radar, and the digital display on the left instrument panel gauge.
In the latest press release we got our hands on, Mazda also mentions the following:
• The latest SKYACTIV Technology and Mazda’s “gram strategy” combine to significantly reduce weight by more than 100kg over the third-generation model
• Front-midship engine rear-wheel-drive configuration achieves an ideal 50:50front-rear weight distribution
• The engine is located closer to the vehicle’s centre; the bonnet, boot lid, front fender and front and rear bumper reinforcements are made of aluminum, and the weight of the soft top is reduced. These combine to realise a lower yaw inertial moment and alower centre of gravity
• The pedals, controls, meters and all equipment are optimally positioned to enable the driver to maintain a straight posture and drive comfortably
• The height of the hood is lowered and the A-pillars and windshield header are moved rearward and made thinner to create a panoramic view with greater visibility of road conditions and peripheral movement
• SKYACTIV-G direct-injection petrol engines are oriented longitudinally and speciallytuned for the MX-5
•New six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are also specially tuned for the MX-5
• New lightweight yet highly rigid suspension fully leverages the know-how of SKYACTIV Technoloy, with a double-wishbone suspension in the front and multilink suspension in the rear
• The brake system is designed to maximise controllability and deliver reassuring effectiveness, plenty of braking power, and an optimised posture when braking
