You can find all kinds of speed bumps in all parts of the world, but few can compete in size with the ones installed in Jersey City.

YouTube author “gtornroth” took a series of (unfortunately, vertical) videos showing unsuspecting drivers flying over the massive speed bumps causing their vehicles to bottom out and bang their bumpers and other components on the asphalt.

Granted, some drivers were going visibly fast, but even at regular speeds, cars were scrapping their front ends.

Apparently, this is a widespread problem as local authorities recently installed these huge speed bumps in various parts of Jersey City, to the disdain of many drivers. The fact that they are not visible makes the problem even worse.

After many drivers complained about damages to their cars, Jersey City officials said that they will lower the bumps.

“In addition to marking the speed humps with thermoplastic, reflective pavement markers, the contractor will also be lowering them,” Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill told NJ.com.

However, she defended the use of the speed bumps.

“The city’s number one priority is the safety of our residents, especially children,” Morrill said. “That is why we have taken the proactive step of installing effective, permanent speed humps to reduce speeding on residential streets, with a focus on streets around schools.”

As for people who damaged their cars, Morrill said that motorists can “register their complaints and claims through the Resident Response Center and they will all be evaluated”.

“However, just because a vehicle has been damaged, speeders will not be rewarded,” she added. “Just like insurance fraud is a crime, documents will be examined by police traffic investigators and anyone who knowingly submits incorrect documents will be prosecuted.”
