Last month BMW introduced us to the 2-Series Convertible and now the automaker’s smallest drop top model has officially debuted at the Paris Auto Show.

Based on the 2-Series Coupe, the successor to the 1-Series Convertible features an electrically operated soft-top said to optimize acoustic comfort, which can be opened or closed in 20 seconds when travelling at up to 50 km/h (31 mph).

The roof takes less space in the boot than in the case of the 1-Series Convertible, which is why the boot can accommodate 280 liters (9.9 cu-ft) of luggage when the top is down. When the roof is closed, volume increases to 335 liters (11.8 cu-ft), up to 30 liters more than what the previous model offered.

BMW says the 2-Series Convertible is more agile than its predecessor, thanks to the increased torsional stiffness of the body structure, the further developed chassis and the new engine lineup.

The 2-Series Convertible is offered with three petrol units and one diesel engine, starting with the 184PS 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo in the 220i Convertible. A 245PS 2.0-liter turbo is offered in the 228i Convertible and a 326PS 3.0-liter twin-turbo in the M235i Convertible. In Europe, diesel fans have one choice, the 190PS 2.0-liter turbo in the 220d Convertible.

All engines are linked to a standard six-speed manual gearbox, with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission offered as an option. The BMW 2-Series Convertible arrives in European dealerships in February 2015 and in the US in spring next year. US prices start from $38,850 for the 228i Convertible – the 220i Convertible is not offered stateside.
