Not only will the next X1 be BMW’s first front-wheel drive SUV and the first to be available with 3-cylinder engines, but we now learn that it will also have the distinction of being their first crossover offered in a LWB version.

The story comes from German publication AMS that reports BMW will develop a long-wheelbase version of the second generation X1 exclusively for China were demand for premium models with more space for rear passengers is booming.

It is likely that the X1 LWB will be manufactured at BMW’s Shenyang production plant in China were it also produces the LWB 3-Series and 5-Series sedans for the local market.

The regular X1 for the rest of the world is expected next year. It is based on the group’s UKL1 platform architecture shared with the MINI and the 2-Series Active Tourer and will be powered by a similar range of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged diesel and gasoline engines.
