Fiat-Chrysler recently registered a trademark for “Trackhawk” and according to the people over at Allpar the new designation is likely destined for Jeep.
Their assumption makes plenty of sense given the name’s similarity to Jeep’s existing “Trail Rated” moniker, as does their belief that it could be used either as a new designation to replace the SRT badge, or to supplement it on an upcoming wilder model(s).
And here’s where speculation steps in: Allpar says that “while sources originally said that a Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee had been ruled out, for various reasons, it’s also possible (though less likely) that the name is being reserved for such a car”.
Car&Driver came up with its own theories for the Trailhawk moniker, four to be specific, including:
1) It replaces the SRT badge
2) Trailhawk is applied on a more handling-focused version of the Grand Cherokee with the same 6.4-liter HEMI V8
3) It’s used on Jeep’s high-performance editions of the Cherokee and next Journey that have been confirmed for 2017
4) The crazy concept mentioned by Allpar about a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Hellcat with the Challenger/Charger’s manic 707hp 6.2-liter supercharged V8
We could add a fifth possibility, one that says there’s nothing planned for the Trailhawk nameplate and that Chrysler is trademarking it to cover its arse and protect the “Trail Rated” designation, you know, just in case, but where’s the fun in that?
