Ever since Opel / Vauxhall showcased the Monza concept, people have been asking for / about a possible re-imagining of the old Calibra idea.
It was a mid-1990s coupe that relied on Vectra underpinnings and a sexier two-door body to attract its buyers. Now, with the advent of an all-new Insignia (Vectra replacement) that’s due no later than 2017, the Calibra issue has come up again.
AutoExpress spoke to Tim Tozer, the managing director of Vauxhall, who indeed confirmed the model is on the table. He said “We need to walk before we can run, but could it [a new Calibra] happen when we launch the new Insignia that looks like the Monza concept (pictured)? Yes we could, but it’s a step by step process.”
It would use basic new Insignia underpinnings and a dash more style than the sedan/hatch and probably be closer in look to the concept and in size to the current Cascada drop top.
Until then, a new Astra will be launched next year, and that’s a really big thing for the two brands, as well. It too will undoubtedly feature Monza concept-inspired styling, but apparently won’t be electrification-friendly, even though “Opel does have a wider EV strategy in place,” according to Tozer.
