It’s not the most surprising report, but it surely is good news for fans of Peugeot hot-hatches: the upcoming 308 GTi will likely have a 270PS (266hp) engine.

The unit will be the same 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder used in the RCZ R sports coupe, with the same output of 270PS (266hp). According to a report from Autocar, the 308 GTi has been confirmed by Peugeot and will be positioned above the recently launched 205PS (202hp) 308 GT (pictured), in a similar way that the RCZ R is positioned above the RCZ GT.

The Peugeot 308 GTi is expected to arrive in European dealerships next year, with standard equipment including much of the 308 GT’s goodies such as LED lights and sports seats. However, it will be tuned for more performance, with the MacPherson strut, torsion beam suspension expected to feature sportier settings.

So how fast will the 308 GTi be? The report estimates a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h) but doesn’t say anything about the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint. Since the RCZ R does it in 5.9 seconds, it’s safe to assume the 308 GTi will be similarly quick.

With an estimated starting price of £25,000 (€31,775) in the UK, the 308 GTi should be a competent rival for the Renault Megane RS and Seat Leon Cupra 280, among other FWD hot-hatch offerings.
