It is the consensus within Porsche’s managing elites that the brand has no need for an entry level model to sit below the Boxster (pictured). Such a model has been hinted at more times than we can count (not just recently, but over the last few years) but it’s always been denied and/or downplayed by the company higher ups.
Now, the fact that such a model, believed to bear the 718 name were it to be made, has been denied yet again. This time, the voice behind it is that of Detlev von Platen, the CEO of Porsche’s North American operations.
Automotive News quoted him as saying: “You won’t see anything lower than the current Boxster model. We had many discussions about this in the group, and the decision was made that the time is not right.”
He went on to say that part of the reason behind the decision is the existence of Porsche’s pre-owned program which allows those interested to get a piece of the action for less than the price of a new car.
This is clearly the move of a company brimming with confidence. Had they not had the success that they did with the Cayenne and more recently the Macan, then maybe there would have been room for a 718.
