We’re thrilled to hear that Heinz-Jakob Neusser, the head of VW’s powertrain development arm, believes the people’s brand can have an “R” version of each and every model in the range. He thinks this is an applicable thought that’s only constrained by “customer demand and commercial viability.”
Australia’s Motoring quotes him as saying “We have had a lot of success with the R models, because the R models are very emotional. The typical R models — from the technology side, the engine side — are at the highest level we can achieve, and as we showed with Golf R 400.”
However, while his view is that there can be an R variant of all their cars, the main ones being talked about now are the Golf, Polo and Passat – there hasn’t been a hot Passat since the V6-powered R36 model…
Interestingly, having six-cylinder engines for these cars is not out of the question, as the source article reports that “longitudinally mounted six-cylinder engines were again in the company’s gun sights, and that the turbocharging of these units was also a possibility.”
Until anything concrete happens, we’re left to contend solely with R-Line-badged models.
