Since its launch in November 1994, the A4 has been a huge success for Audi, which has delivered more than six million units over those two decades. This makes it the best-selling model to ever wear the four-ring badge, so a celebration was in order.
Now in its fourth generation, of which more than two million cars have been delivered since 2007, the mid-size premium family car has been produced in saloon, station (Avant in Audi-speak) and cabriolet versions. Most of them were manufactured in Ingolstadt but the A4 was, and still is, also made in the Neckarsulm plant as well as China, India and Indonesia solely for the local markets.
“When the A4 superseded the successful Audi 80 series 20 years ago, it became a best-seller soon after its launch. It was the fastest production ramp‑up in the company’s history”,said Dr. Huber Waltl, a Board of Management member for Production at Audi AG. “The foundations were laid by our employees’ commitment and the excellent preparations made for the new model series”, he added.
Speaking of new model series, Audi also announced that it’s already preparing for the launch of the fifth-generation A4 in 2015. In order to build the new model, it is currently installing “more than 1,300 machines like robots and welding guns” in the new body shop at the northern part of the Ingolstadt factory.
