While BMW and Toyota have already confirmed a sports car deal, their pact could also deepen towards expanding BMW’s fuel-efficient range.
The German automaker will reportedly use Toyota’s fuel cell technology to develop a new model for its i subbrand, according to Autocar.
The magazine report suggests the need is there to combat Daimler and Honda in the hydgrogen car market, as well as complete the range for the i cars, with a fuel cell fitting between the i3 pure electric and i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.
A BMW i fuel cell car would adapt technology from the Toyota FCV, due on sale globally next year.
Previous rumors about a BMW i5 consisted of a larger i3 model or something even to do battle with the upcoming Tesla Model X crossover.
