As I’m sure most of you know, Cadillac has announced a new naming strategy for its future models. All car models will use CT plus a single digit-number, while all SUVs and crossovers will use XT plus a single-digit number.

The model that will inaugurate the new nomenclature is the CT6 sedan, known as Cadillac’s range-topping sedan. The new names will not be introduced all at once, but phased in as models are replaced or newly launched.

To show that it means business, this week, the luxury automaker trademarked no less than 13 other model names, from both categories. In addition to the CT6, it has trademarked CT2, CT3, CT4, CT5, CT7 and CT8. Cadillac also snatched up XT2, XT3, XT4, XT5, XT6, XT7, and XT8.

We don’t know whether Cadillac will actually build all these 14 models, but if it does, its lineup will be more than double what it is today. Cadillac currently has four car models (ATS, CTS, ELR and XTS) and two SUVs (SRX and Escalade).

It is not a secret that the automaker plans to expand to approximately 10 models within a few years, which would leave some of the newly trademarked names available for body styles like coupes or convertibles based on core products.

In light of the new trademarked names, it is clear that the Cadillac CT6 won’t exactly be the brand’s flagship model. It will be more the top-of-the-line sedan, with the flagship role to be likely assumed by the CT7 or CT8. Let’s just hope one of them will be a production version of the fabulous Elmiraj Concept (pictured) introduced last year.
