There’s probably not a single automotive reviewer out there that didn’t at one point comment that the Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S need (and could handle) more power.
Now, Cosworth has announced two power packages for the Subaru-developed FA20 engine, the more potent of which pushing the horsepower up to 280.
The company says the Stage 1 pack is “aimed at drivers who are looking for an easy way to upgrade the driveability and overall performance.” It bumps the output up to 230 hp, though you have to opt for Stage 1.3 to get the full benefit. Cosworth says that on top of the 30 peak horsepower gained, the pack actually gives 40 more at 4,100 rpm.
Go for Stage 2, and you unleash the promised 280 hp. It does so via a full supercharger kit that includes the blower itself, an intercooler and a new intake manifold. It also obviously requires an ECU remap, but that’s pretty much it.
