Google dominates many services people use on a daily basis, and is infiltrating both the cars of today and tomorrow. But some automakers are telling the tech giant to slow down.

According to Bloomberg, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are warning against Google accessing in-car information

“Google tries to accompany people throughout their day, to generate data and then use that data for economic gain,” Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said last week. “It’s at that point where a conflict with Google seems pre-programmed. That’s where we need to negotiate.”

Even though VW is one manufacturer that has lauded Google integration into its cars, namely Audi’s navigation systems, it’s interesting to see their opposition to data collecting by the company. If anything, it’s a sign they’re afraid of giving Google more inroads to be an automotive rival.

But at least someone is calling out on an increase of data collection and looking for some restraint considering how increasingly connected new cars are becoming.
