Ah, remember the golden days of standalone calculators and sore necks from trying to spell cheeky words with numbers of the “6922251*8=55378008”-kind turned upside-down?
Evidently, the same amusing practice can be applied to license plates and one of the best we ever saw came from Reddit user William48151623 with his “370HSSV” plate.
The thing is, he posted the picture of the plate on the internet and ultimately, it caught the attention of another user who reported it to the DMV, which in turn, banned it. William didn’t bother to return it and still uses it for show and tell purposes when the vehicle is stationary.
See what he said on Reddit below:
[From William48151623]
“When I ordered the plate online, I had just recently bought the car so I needed to register it to one of my other vehicles. When I picked up the plates from the court house I couldn’t resist taking a picture immediately with it on the Lotus; the world needed to see it in all its glory. So I stuck it up there, took a few pics, and put the temp tags back on. I posted the picture on social media and Reddit and it blew up! (800k+ views on the imgur link alone).Since then its been copied countless times to many different websites and on all sorts of “Top X Lists” for license plates.
Anyway, a Reddit user sent me a message saying he reported it to the DMV not because he was offended but because I had thought of the plate first… Sure enough, I get a letter in the mail two weeks later saying my plate had been banned yet I had never driven a single mile with it on any vehicle, and it was registered to a completely different car…
So I called to appeal but they wouldn’t have it. They said only one person complained and if one person takes “offense” it’s enough to ban any plate regardless of what it says. They did say I could get another license plate for free to replace the old one. They wanted me to send them the “asshole” plates to be destroyed but you can see how well I listened. At car shows and stuff I’ll stick the plates on because people love it. So yeah…”
