Mazda has released a new police car version of its current, pre-facelift CX-5 crossover, for the Hiroshima Prefectural Police who will use it for highway patrol purposes.

The black-and-white-livered CX-5 is based on the all-wheel drive model powered by the Mazda’s SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine.

The automaker said the powertrain is an ideal combo for the region’s “severe weather environment” during the winter months, while also delivering a fuel economy of 18km/l (equal to 42.3mpg US and 5.5l/100km) on the Japanese driving cycle.
