How do you top a car as impressive as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class? With the Mercedes-Maybach S600, everything is just a little bit more over the top, a little more special and a bit more ludicrous.
Everything in an S-Class is already covered in leather, but in the Maybach everything is quilt-stitched – even the center console lid. The door panels are covered in a healthy dose of buttons on the rear doors to control the window shades, seat position, let alone something as mundane as opening and closing a window.
It’s a four-position setup inside, with tons of shades and pillows on the rear headrests. There’s a box in the middle that a security guard said I couldn’t open. It doesn’t have quite the decadence of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley, but then maybe that’s because it’s a lot like the regular Benz’s beautiful rear seat.
Visually, little separates the Mercedes-Maybach from the Mercedes-Benz, apart from the Maybach logos on the pillars and a strange chrome/black window frame treatment that I’m not a fan of. It’s a lot like an S600, only a little bit nicer.
I’m sure Mercedes will sell plenty of the Maybachs in this sandy beige color, but it seems to add a certain level of Hyundai Equus to this car. The black cars seem to exude the elegance Mercedes implies with this car.
But most of all, it’s still a big Mercedes sedan, and the changes make it the car to have for those who can’t stand all the common folk owning Benzes these days.
