Hyundai’s next big move will be the wide roll out of R-Spec and N-Spec or N-badged performance models, which in some ways, should be similar to Audi’s S-Line and S/RS monikers respectively.
We’ve already seen R-Spec models with light chassis and styling upgrades such as the Veloster, and Genesis Coupe and Sedan, but Hyundai is expected to expand the range to include more models in global markets, with the Koreans recently showing an R-Spec study of their Brazilian market HB20 supermini.
The European market i20 sub-compact could be next in line to receive the R-Spec treatment, especially since Hyundai is planning to debut its high-performance N badge on the hatch with a WRC replica-style model believed to get a 250hp 1.6-liter turbo lump.
It would make sense for the Koreans to bridge the gap between the regular i20s and the i20 N with a sportier proposal, one that PS artist Remco Meulendijk made a speculative rendering wearing a hotter costume and wheels.
