Here’s our first look inside the second generation of BMW’s X1 compact crossover that is now less than 12 months away from its debut.
If you were expecting to see something dramatically different from the 2-Series Active Tourer that is its closest relative in BMW‘s range, then you’re probably not too familiar with how things work at the Bavarian firm these days.
The new X1 gets the same style instrument panel and upper dashboard design with the floating touchscreen display for the infotainment system positioned on top, but BMW has relocated the climate controls just under the audio unit.
Under the refashioned body lies the BMW Group’s new UKL1 architecture that uses high-strength steel construction for increased rigidity and reduced weight. It’s the same front-wheel based platform found in the 2-Series Active Tourer and the latest Mini hatchbacks. Buyers will be able to opt for BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system on higher-end models.
Power will come from the brand’s most recent 1.5-liter 3-cylinder 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel units paired to both six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions – at least in Europe, because other markets like the U.S. might not offer a stick shift option.
