While Seat currently has no SUV in its lineup, the Spanish automaker has confirmed the launch of two crossovers within the next three years and possibly a third one later on.
Currently, the closest thing to an SUV in Seat’s lineup is the Leon X-Perience all-wheel drive jacked-up estate model (pictured) based on the Leon ST. That is about to change though, as Seat chairman Jürgen Stackmann has confirmed to CAR Magazine. The executive said Seat’s first SUV is only 18 months away.
The compact crossover will be based on the same MQB platform as the Leon and the VW Golf and will debut at the Geneva Auto Show in 2016. Seat’s SUV will be available in two- and four-wheel drive variants and will feature numerous fuel-saving technologies, Stackmann said. As previously reported, the model will be built in cooperation with Skoda at the Czech carmaker’s plant in Kvasiny.
There will be a second SUV as well, a smaller one that will arrive approximately a year after the compact model to challenge the Nissan Juke. While the compact and small SUVs are certain, Stackmann said the company doesn’t rule out a larger crossover/MPV – possibly a rival for Renault’s new Espace.
As for Seat’s other models, Stackmann’s vision is to split the lineup into three core model lines: the Seat Ibiza and Leon, the new crossover family and the rest of the models (Mii, Altea, Alhambra, Toledo).
