A California couple got a shock early Wednesday morning when a BMW X3 crashed through the roof of their garage. Police got even more of a surprise when the BMW driver wasn’t in the car.

The crash happened around midnight Wednesday in Escondido, Calif., according to NBC 7 San Diego. Homeowner George Strother said there was a huge bang, which was assumed to be an earthquake.

Then minutes later, first responders came to his front door after they were alerted of an airbag deployment in the BMW. That’s when Strother and his wife saw the mangled X3 had come through the roof of their garage and landed on the hood of their Nissan Pathfinder.

Crews looked into the X3, according to the report, and saw no one in the vehicle. And a call to area hospitals showed no one coming in with injuries consistent with the crash. The BMW may have drifted from a road above the Strother’s home, but police have not concluded that or if drugs or alcohol were involved yet.

An absolutely bizarre scene to wake up to. NBC San Diego has more images.
