It turns out that BMW was not actually planning to join forces with Tesla and share parts and knowledge. Apparently, the rumor we posted not long ago is false, this being confirmed by The Detroit Bureau citing information from a German business magazine.
When we posted the rumor, it kind of made sense since it followed not long after we learned that Daimler was selling its Tesla shares. Moreover, BMW’s recent incursion into the world of dedicated EVs and plug-in hybrids (with the i3 and i8) also seemed to back the claims of partnership talks made by the Silicon Valley-based manufacturer’s CEO, Elon Musk.
He did probably talk to BMW representatives, as he was recently in Germany, but he may have blown an informal conversation out of proportion.
Either way, the two companies are not going to work together, so Tesla needs to look for the partners it needs elsewhere. Daimler wanted to get rid of its Tesla shares and so did Toyota (well, only partly), so it doesn’t seem to be an easy task…
