For the second time ever after the Mazda3, one of the Japanese automaker’s model reaches three million units. The Hiroshima-based manufacturer announced that the Mazda6 (Atenza in Japan) that the milestone was reached at the end of November, after 12 years and nine months.
The first-gen Mazda6 production started in February 2002 at the Hofu Plant No.2 in Yamaguchi, Japan. It sold 1,945,850 units until 2007, when it was replaced by the second generation that was less successful, with 718,882 deliveries. The third generation was launched in 2012 and has, so far, sold 335,773 units worldwide.
Mazda’s mid-size saloon and estate is currently manufactured, apart from Hofu, in China by the FAW Car Co. It is also assembled locally at Mazda Sollers in Russia and Vina Mazda Automobile in Vietnam.
The company also announced that, starting January, it will roll out a revamped model that will feature “a more refined design expression”, i.e. a mild exterior facelift, a retuned suspension for improved ride quality and the new-generation Mazda Connect infotainment and connectivity system.
Japan and the US will be the first markets to get the 2015 Mazda 6, with other markets to follow.
