This could be the most revealing shot of BMW’s upcoming, second-generation X1 compact crossover yet.
It was taken in China and shows the front end of the car including the headlamps, fog lamps, a third of the bumper and the alloy wheels. We can’t be 100 percent certain, but for what it’s worth, the styling matches what we’ve seen in the most recent spy shots of the next X1 and is similar to the new X4, X5, X6 and the facelifted X3.
The new X1 is based on the same UKL1 underpinnings as the 2-Series Active Tourer and will share its engines and gearboxes too, with entry- and mid-level models taking advantage of the Bavarian firm’s frugal 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbos and top-spec cars using 2.0-liter inline-four turbo petrol and diesel units.
Front-wheel drive will come as standard, but you’ll be able to get BMW‘s ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive system on higher end models.
The X1 Mk2 is due to go on sale in Europe late next year (it should come to North America in 2016), with a plug-in hybrid version to follow later on.
