Fast American coupes have come a long way from what usual preconceptions about these cars would have one believe.

The closest to the original muscle car formula is the Dodge Challenger, and in particular the Hellcat. However, you can get a radically different experience if you buy either the new Ford Mustang GT or the Chevy Camaro Z/28.

The three were comparatively tested by Automobile Magazine, and the result of that test is predictable. The Z/28 is a track monster, matching European cars for sheer cornering and braking capability, while the Hellcat is just mad and finesse is the last word you’d use to describe its handling.

The Mustang, which is the most modern of the lot, is the best balance. It’s pretty good on track, but it’s also really accomplished on the road too. With its new independent suspension and more upmarket interior, it’s hard not to place it really high on any down-to-earth enthusiast’s wishlist.
