The Mazda6 (or Atenza as the Japanese know it) is one of the best-looking sedans in its class, but unfortunately the current generation model lacks a performance variant.
However, between 2005 and 2007 the first-generation model was offered in a high-performance variant called Mazda6 MPS in Europe, Mazdaspeed6 in North America and Mazdaspeed Atenza in Japan. It was powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 260PS (256hp) in European spec and 270hp in North American spec.
Unfortunately, Mazda didn’t offer an MPS model for the second-generation Mazda6 and it appears that we won’t be luckier with the current model either. It’s a shame though, and Theophilus Chin’s rendering of a hypothetical third-gen Mazda6 MPS proves that such a model would be a looker.
